For the first time, the World Trade Organization hosted the Parliamentary Conference on the WTO.

This international gathering organised by the Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU), one of the oldest international organisations based in Geneva, jointly with the European parliament, is an opportunity for legislators worldwide to overview and scrutinise international trade rules and the current Doha Round negotiations.

About 400 members of Parliament attended the conference with a view to engaging in an intense dialogue. They had the opportunity to speak to key WTO players, including many Ambassadors heavily involved in the conduct of the Doha negotiations. They interacted actively with the WTO General Council Chair, Ambasador Yonov Frederick Agah as well as the WTO Director General, Pascal Lamy.

This conference provided an opportunity for parliamentarians to deliver a strong and critical message of support to the current Doha negotiations.
